Sudden Death in Elderly Patients Taking Risperdal

The atypical antipsychotic drug risperidone, sold under the brand name of Risperdal, is often prescribed to elderly patients who are suffering from dementia. This medication is used to treat the agitation that’s typical in dementia patients, in addition to patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, Tourette’s syndrome and autism.

But this powerful drug has been known to increase an elderly dementia patient’s risk of sudden death, particularly in individuals suffering from dementia-related psychosis (notably, it’s not approved to treat this.)

Sudden death in dementia patients is a side effect that the drug manufacturer allegedly downplayed in marketing materials. The same has been said for other serious side effects, such as diabetes complications and gynecomastia, a condition whereby males develop breasts.

The precise mechanism for triggering sudden death in elderly dementia patients is not known, although it is known that Risperdal’s side effects include arrhythmia, so it’s possible that this could be a contributing factor.

Risperdal’s side effects also include drooling, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), convulsions, tremors and seizures, confusion, fever and more.
