Diabetes, Hyperglycemia as Side Effects of Risperdal

Have you suffered from diabetes-related complications or hyperglycemia while taking Risperdal?

Risperdal has also been associated with side effects related to diabetes, as it promotes a condition known as hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is an elevation in one’s blood sugar levels, which can be especially dangerous in those who suffer from diabetes.

Symptoms of hyperglycemia can include:

  • increased thirst;
  • increased urination;
  • excessive hunger;
  • lethargy;
  • dizziness; and
  • a general feeling of unwellness.

The elevated blood sugar levels can result in a dramatic impact on diabetics, making it much more challenging for patients to maintain and manage their diabetes in an effective manner. This dramatically increases the risk of suffering complications from diabetes, such as diabetic shock.

Notably, it’s alleged that Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen downplayed the serious side effects of Risperdal, including diabetes complications.

Risperdal, the brand name for a drug called risperidone, is an atypical antipsychotic medication that’s often dispensed to treat patients with schizophrenia, autism, dementia and bipolar disorder, among other conditions. This drug does carry some very significant side effects, in addition to diabetes-related complications and hyperglycemia. The most well-known side effect is gynecomastia, which entails the development of breasts in a male.

If you’ve suffered a serious diabetes-related side effect while taking Risperdal, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering and other damages.
